Many metallurgical engineers have sometimes pondered over the idea of global relocation in search of the best paying jobs. In order to be successful in this venture, one needs to perform ample research and narrow down the countries and geographical locations where job prospects are the greatest for metallurgical engineers. Only then can the list then be narrowed to specific locations depending upon your taste of lifestyle, culture, family values and so on in order to have an overall satisfying career. In this article, we will explore the top five countries where metallurgical engineeringjobs abound, even though other regions may provide ample opportunities as well.
At the top of the list is the United States of America, with its vast research laboratories in academic universities, national institutions as well as non-research opportunities in aerospace and medical industries as well as the standard commercial industrial base. Following the top slot is Japan, primarily focusing on industrial metallurgy and advanced films and coatings. Japan has a sizeable industrial base as is well known, but a tremendous amount of research opportunities exist in the coatings technologies that they have concentrated upon. The third in the list is Germany. Germany has concentrated research efforts in the field of thin films and is a haven for research metallurgists that have an interest in this area. The industrial base of Germany is also fairly well distributed as far as fields of activity for materials scientists.
Engineer Job
The fourth in the list for metallurgical engineeringjob opportunities is India. Metallurgists in India have focused on non ferrous metallurgy for centuries, going back in time to copper statues and brass work. Ferrous metallurgists are in great demand because of the hot industrial growth in recent times requiring heat treaters, foundry as well as welding engineers. And the fifth is Australia with its huge mines that attract mining engineers and metallurgists. Australia also has significant university research work that is performed year after year in the field of mining metallurgy both in ferrous and non-ferrous fields.

Civil engineering is a concept that deals with the design, construction and maintenance of the physical and naturally built environment. The act of civil construction and engineering includes bridges, roads, canals, airports, dams and buildings. These are merely just a few examples of what civil construction and engineering is about.
Civil engineering is one of the oldest engineering disciplines after military engineering. It has been an aspect of life since the beginning of human existence. Until modern times there was no clear distinction between civil engineering and architecture.
Engineer Job
One of the main aspects of civil construction and engineering is structural engineering. With structural engineering a structure needs to be able to successfully support itself as well as being able to resist loads. It is the job of a structural engineer to ensure that the design and construction of aspects such as bridges, roads and airports etc are safe and successful for their function. Some of the design considerations that need to be kept in mind are the strength, stiffness and stability of the civil construction. All of these need to commit to safety checks so that the structure can hold itself. Other considerations that need to be kept in mind when it comes to the civil construction and engineering includes the cost, constructability, safety, aesthetics and sustainability of the proposed structure.
Civil Construction and Engineering
In the society that we live in today it is safe to say that society wouldn't work without civil construction and engineering. This is because the infrastructures that we use in our daily lives, the infrastructures that support our daily lives wouldn't be in existence if it wasn't for civil construction and engineering. We use aspects such as roads and harbours, railways and airports, hospitals, sports stadiums and schools, access to drinking water and shelter from the weather in our daily lives without a second thought to the construction and engineering that is behind them. We rely more than ever on building contractor teams and inventive people who design and build as well as maintain the sophisticated environment that surrounds our everyday life.
The job of a civil construction team/engineer is more than merely the building side of these infrastructures. They have many activities that they must do every day, including drafting, decision making, computer interaction, communication, documentation, creative thinking, organising, information collecting, estimating and analysing. It is the job of a construction engineer to draft and design structures and show others how to build them. A construction engineer has to analyse information and make the right decision to solve the problems.
If you are a business owner or the owner of property who wishes to expend and build civil structures such as a road to provide easier access or an extension is needed at an airport, it is essential that you enlist the help of a building contractor team who are highly skilled and experienced in undertaking all aspects of civil building and construction. The building contractor team should have structural engineers who are able to undertake the planning and safety aspects of the design to ensure that the finished product is up to standards.

As a student considering your options for college or university, the choices can be overwhelming. This is the case even within certain disciplines where there might be a dozen different subcategories and / or specialties within the profession. Let's explore some of the more popular Engineering disciplines, shall we?
Agricultural Engineering is the engineering discipline that strives to apply engineering science to agricultural production and farming. In some circles it is commonly accepted that the scope of agricultural engineering is broader than all other forms of engineering, as it combines elements of mechanical, civil, and chemical engineering with animal and plant biology.
Engineer Job
Architectural Engineering involves the application of engineering principles to building construction and design. In some parts of the world, the words architect and architectural engineer are used interchangeably.
13 Different Types of Engineering Explained
Biomedical Engineering strives to apply engineering principles and technology to the field of medicine. Originally considered an interdisciplinary specialization, biomedical eng has grown to become a respected discipline of its own. Tissue engineering, while also considered a specialization within biotechnology, is one such example of biomedical engineering in action.
Ceramic Engineering relates to the practice of designing and creating objects from inorganic, non-metallic materials. The process generally includes the purification of raw materials, the production of compounds, their formation into components, and the study of their composition, properties and structure.
Civil Engineering is a discipline that deals primarily with the design, construction and maintenance of bridges, roads, canals, and the like. As a point of interest, this engineering discipline was enshrined to distinguish itself from military engineering. It is considered the second-oldest discipline, after military.
Computer Engineering is a combination of computer science and electronic engineering. Computer engineers design both computer software and computer hardware, in addition to developing solutions for the integration of the two.
Electrical Engineering is the study and application of electromagnetism, electronics, and electricity. It's a broad-based discipline that encompasses the design and implementation of various electronic / electrical systems such as circuits, generators, motors, and transformers.
Environmental Engineering refers to the application of scientific principles to environmental improvement. Generally speaking, this discipline attempts to provide healthy air, water and land for safe habitation. Additionally, this particular discipline attempts to find ways to reverse environmental damages caused by pollution.
Industrial Engineering is a discipline concerned with the development and ongoing improvement of integrated systems. In manufacturing systems, focus is placed on finding ways to eliminate waste (time, money, materials, energy, etc). Industrial engineering is not necessarily limited to manufacturing, however.
Manufacturing Engineering, on the other hand, deals almost exclusively with the design and maintenance of different manufacturing processes, tools, equipment and machines. Lean manufacturing principles are one such example of scientific manufacturing in action.
Materials Engineering is concerned with the properties of matter and it's application to science and technology. This generally refers to the study of the structure of materials at the molecular level, and includes elements of applied physics and chemistry. Nanotechnology is one such example of materials engineering in action.
Mechanical Engineering is one of the oldest disciplines, and is primarily concerned with the design, production and use of tools and machines. It is primarily concerned with the generation and application of mechanical power.
Nuclear Engineering is a discipline that is primarily concerned with finding practical applications of nuclear energy. This includes the development and maintenance of nuclear reactors, power plants, and weapons.

Our annual survey of those using online job boards to find work in the engineering sector is a good snapshot of what's changing in the sector and what's not.
And sadly one thing that's remained fairly static over the years is the number of women who respond. With the percentage this year standing at 10 per cent, it's obvious engineering is still a very male-dominated profession.
Engineer Job
Old diehards in the industry might not see this as a potential problem - 'that's just the way things are in engineering' - but by not doing more to encourage women into the profession, aren't we missing a trick that will mean when the economy gets going again and new technologies start to come on stream, there will be a skills gap to fill?
Women Under Represented in Engineering Jobs
It's not as if girls aren't academically good enough in the subjects needed - in fact, they're generally outperforming the boys in what are usually seen as 'masculine' subjects like maths and science.
The truth is they just don't want to.
Potential reasons abound to explain boys' greater affinity with engineering - a misspent youth fiddling with Meccano, building go-carts out of prams, or cannibalising old bikes - but in reality it's probably girls' self-exclusion from a subject they perceive as nerdy and 'non-caring' that does the damage.
Instead, girls tend to head for careers and professions where they feel they can make a difference at a personal level, connect with individuals and provide help where it's needed. The harder-edged business of engineering seems far removed from their people-focused world.
Given this, if we want to encourage women into engineering, perhaps we should approach things from a slightly different angle, by presenting engineering with a human face - emphasising the ability of engineering to benefit not just one or ten or even a hundred people, but quite literally millions of people.
After all, many engineering projects have the capacity to do that, to change continents by building irrigation schemes that bring fertility to previously barren areas, developing sanitation programmes that banish disease from slum areas, creating green technologies that help protect vital habitats, or designing new renewable energy systems.
In other words, isn't it about time we thought - to use 'marketing speak' - not just about presenting the 'features' of engineering, but about extolling its 'benefits' as a powerful force for good to be navigated through an ever-changing world? This would help create a more people-focused 'face' for the profession that would have far greater appeal to women.
When there seems to be a general agreement that the economy needs rebalancing by moving away from dependence on financial services, this could be an ideal time to reinvent engineering.
And when you look around the world, with women already making up 18 per cent of Spain's engineers, 20 per cent of Italy's and 26 per cent of Sweden's, this isn't something that can't be done, but we've obviously some catching up to do.

Job prospects for metallurgical engineering trained graduates and people looking for employment has never been better, even during these tough economic times. Of course, during booming economic times, employers were willing to give sign on bonuses and all other kinds of perquisites to lure metallurgical engineers to accept their job offers. Things are a bit different now, but the opportunities for locating metallurgical engineeringjobs still abound if you are willing to do the work to research them out and work at finding yourself gainful employment in this exciting field. In this article we will briefly outline certain areas that are often overlooked.
First and foremost place for metallurgical engineeringjobs is the aerospace industry. This is a field where high tech materials scientists and engineers are always sought after. Because of the extreme environments of operation, materials and metallurgical engineers can always find jobs in the aerospace and defense industry.
Engineer Job
Somewhat related to the aerospace industry, but overlapping commercial industrial applications is the thermal spray coatings industry which has a high demand for metallurgical engineering positions to be filled. One can find employment either in the coatings processing business or the coatings raw materials business such as the manufacture of thermal spray wires and powders.
Metallurgical Engineering Jobs - Where Are They
Teaching and research positions in metallurgical engineering have been a steady source of job opportunities for metallurgists. These include positions in colleges and universities as well as in research labs and government organizations such as the transportation department or the nuclear regulatory agencies.
The classical industries of foundry, metal casting and heat treating also have metallurgical engineeringjob openings although they may be fewer in the developed countries and more so readily available in the developing countries because of outsourcing practices. Thus if you are a metallurgist, there are plenty of employment opportunities even now, and so do not let anyone bring down your spirits by telling you otherwise.

COMPONENTS OF HSE MANAGEMENT
Health, Safety and Environmental management should be part of the engineering profession in a country for the purpose of
o duty of care
o economic reasons and
o legal reasons.
HSE management should therefore consider five broad phases:
* Specifications
* Design and implementation
* Installation and commissioning
* Operation and maintenance
* Changes after commissioning.
* Compliance with the standards requires four essential elements:
* Identification of safety functions required for the safe shutdown
* Assignment of a safety integrity level (SIL) for each safety function
* Use of the safety lifecycle for the engineering design and
* Verification of the SIL achieved for each safety function.
Engineer Job
3.0 ENGINEERING CODE OF PRACTICE
The engineering code of practice takes into consideration the following:
* Public safety: Giving priority to the safety and well-being of the community and having regard to this principle in assessing obligations to the clients, employers and colleagues.
* Risk Management: Taking reasonable steps to minimize the risk of loss of lives, injuries or suffering.
* Workplace and construction site: Minimizing potential dangers involved in the construction and manufacture of engineering products and processes.
* Public/Community well-being
* Communication
* Conflicts of interest
* Confidentiality
Health, Safety & Environmental (HSE) Management In Engineering Practice
The privilege of practicing engineering is entrusted to those qualified and who have the responsibility for applying engineering skills, scientific knowledge and ingenuity for the advancement of human welfare and quality of life. Fundamental principles of conduct of engineers include truth, honesty and trustworthiness in their service to the society, honourable and ethical practice showing fairness, courtesy and good faith towards clients, colleagues and others. Engineers take societal, cultural, economic, environmental and safety aspects into consideration and strive for the efficient use of the world's resources to meet long term human needs.
4.0 SAFE ENGINEERING DESIGNS
Safety is a concern in virtually all engineering design processes. Engineers should understand safety in the context of engineering design and what it means to say that a design is safe against human injuries.
Current design methods prioritize economic considerations over environmental ones. In some cases, economic considerations also serve environmental goals. For instance, the minimization of materials used in a structure means resources are saved. If they are saved at the expense of the length of the operating life of a product, then, economic considerations conflict with environmental interests which demand that products be made as durable as possible because of the need to minimize resource usage and waste generation in the long term.
Safety is the antonym of risk. So, a design is safe to the extent that it reduces risk. Safe design aims at minimizing risk in the standard sense of this term.
A safe design is the combination of all those procedures and principles that are used by engineers to make designed objects safe against accidents leading to human death or injuries, long term health effects, damage to the environment or malfunctioning in general.
Several design strategies used to achieve safety in operations of potentially dangerous technology are:
* inherently safe design
* safety factors
* negative feedback (self-shutdown) and
* multiple independent safety barriers.
Probabilistic Risk Assessment (PRA) is the most common method of assessing safety but safe designs are used to reduce risks in the standard (probabilistic) sense but is inadequate. Safe design strategies are used to reduce estimated probabilities of injuries or reducing uncertainties not only risks. They are used to cope with hazards and eventualities that cannot be assigned meaningful probabilities.
5.0 DESIGN PRINCIPLES IN ENGINEERING There are four (4) main design principles in Engineering practice.
(a) Inherently safe design:
This minimizes the inherent dangers in the process as far as possible. Potential hazards are excluded rather than enclosed or coped with. For instance, dangerous substances are replaced by less dangerous ones and fire proof materials are used rather than inflammable ones.
(b) Safety Factors
Construction should be strong enough to resist load and disturbances exceeding those that are intended. A common way to obtain such safety reserves is to employ explicitly chosen numerical safety factors are employed. If a safety factor of two (2) is employed when building a bridge, then the bridge is calculated to resist twice the maximal load to which it will be exposed to in practice.
(c) Negative feedback mechanisms
This is introduced to achieve a self-shutdown in case of device failure or when the operator looses control. Examples are safety valves that let out steam when the pressure is too high in a steam boiler and the dead man's hole that stops the train when the driver falls asleep. One of the most important safety measures in the nuclear industry is to ensure that reactors close down automatically in critical situations.
(d) Multiple Independent Safety Barriers
Safety barriers are arranged in chains, so that each barrier is independent of its predecessors (if the first fails, the second is still intact). The first barriers prevent accidents; the second barriers limit the consequences of an accident and rescue services as the last resort.
Safety factors and multiple safety barriers deal with uncertainties as well as risks. But currently, Probabilistic Risk Analysis (PRA) is used but does not deal with uncertainties. Probabilistic calculations can support but will not supplant the Engineers' ethically responsible judgment (environment, health and safety culture).
Safety engineering principles also include education of operators, maintenance of equipment and installations and incidence reporting are examples of safety practices of general importance.
6.0 HEALTH, SAFETY & ENVIRONMENTAL MANAGEMENT IN ENGINEERING PRACTICE
The Engineering profession is expected to be the harbinger of Health, Safety & Environmental management by virtue of the complexity of the output of the profession and their impacts on the lives of the general populace. How have we carried this along in our professional practices?
Seven (7) bad engineering practices have been identified:
* Believing that if something is not specifically stated, either "shall do" or "shall not do" in the standards, an engineer does not need to worry about it.
* Thinking that meeting the minimum requirements means the process is safe and complies with the standard.
* Ignoring the importance of good engineering practice.
* Designing systems that meet economic requirements but not safety protection requirements.
* Neglecting human factors (errors in calculations etc)
* Focusing on capital cost and not on lifecycle costs.
* Focusing only on the safety integrity level (SIL) and not on prevention.
Safety is an essential ethical requirement in engineering practice. Strategies for safe design are used not only to reduce estimated probabilities of injuries but also to cope with hazards and eventualities that cannot be assigned meaningful probabilities. Designers have an ethical responsibility to make constructions that are safe for future use. Safety is concerned with avoiding certain classes of events that are morally right to avoid.
In engineering design, safety consideration always includes safety against unintended human death or injuries that occur as a result of the unintended use of the designed object for:
* Prevention of damage to the environment
* Prevention of long term health effects
For example, if a bridge collapses, the engineers who designed it are held responsible.
Building designers and builders must obey construction safety in the use of Scaffolds, tool nets, tool boxes, mechanical lifts and manual lifts under safe procedures, use of personal protective equipments (PPEs) on sites (boots/helmets), clear passages and road-ways, construction tapes to cordon off work areas etc. Most engineers have neglected this aspect, thus, playing with the lives of the generality of the populace.
What engineers do have lasting influences on safety and define our level of Environment, Health and Safety culture.
7.0 ETHICAL OBLIGATIONS IN ENGINEERING PRACTICE
Ethical obligations are necessary in order for engineers to carry out their profession. Without the obligation of confidentiality, clients could not trust engineers with commercially sensitive information. Without these information, engineers could not do their jobs. The moral obligations of our profession can be understood as duties which are necessary.
There are five (5) fundamental values necessary for the ethical obligations:
* Protection of lives and safeguarding of people.
* Professionalism, integrity and competence
* Commitment to community/public well-being
* Sustainable management and care for the environment
* Sustaining engineering knowledge
8.0 ENGINEERING PRACTICE REQUIREMENTS
* Engineers shall hold paramount the Health, Safety and Environment/welfare of the public in the practice of their profession.
* Engineers shall practice only in their areas or field of competence, in a careful and diligent manner and in conformance with standards, laws, codes, rules and regulations applicable to engineering practice.
* Engineers shall examine the societal and environmental impact of their actions and projects, including the use and conservation of resources and energy in order to make informed recommendations and decisions..
* Engineers should declare their interests clearly.
* Engineers shall sign and take responsibility for all engineering works which they prepared or directly supervised. Engineers may sign works prepared by others only with their consent and after sufficient review and verification.
* Engineers shall act as faithful agents for their employers or clients and maintain confidentiality, avoid conflicts of interest whenever possible and disclose unavoidable conflicts.
* Engineers professional concerns must be made known to the client and the consequences of engineering decisions or judgments.
* Engineers should reject any public works, engineering decisions or practice that endanger the HSE of the public.
* Engineers shall commit to life-long learning, strive to advance the body of engineering knowledge and should encourage other engineers to do likewise.
* Engineers shall promote responsibility, commitment and ethics both in the education and practice phases of engineering. They should enhance society's awareness of engineer's responsibilities to the public and encourage the communication of these principles of ethical conduct among engineers.
9.0 HSE SUSTAINABILITY MANAGEMENT
This is about the long term survival of humanity. It recognizes that decisions made today must enable both those in the present as well as people of the foreseeable future to make effective choices about their quality of life.
Failure to identify risks to safety and the inability to address or control these risks can result in massive costs, both human and economic. The multidisciplinary nature of safety engineering means that a very broad array of professionals are actively involved in accident prevention or safety engineering.
A critical fault endangers or few people. A catastrophic fault endangers, harms or kills a significant number of people. Engineer's errors or inability to incorporate the HSE management in his practice spells catastrophic.
10.0 THE WAY FORWARD
Everyone must strengthen his or her understanding of HSE awareness by making safety a priority. Also, cost effective solutions in order to gain the biggest return on investment should be developed.
Engineers take early design of a system, analyze it to find what faults can occur and then propose safety requirements in design specifications upfront and changes to existing systems to make the system safer.
If significant safety problems are discovered late in the design process, correcting them can e very expensive. This type of error has the potential to waste large sums of money.
* At all times, take all reasonable care to ensure that your work and the consequences of your work cause no unacceptable risk to safety.
* Take all reasonable steps to make your management/client and those to whom they have a duty of care aware of the risks you identify.
* Make anyone overruling or neglecting your professional advice formally aware of the consequent risks.
* It is critical for engineers to maintain a deep and broad understanding of the many technical and professional practice issues that they will inevitably encounter in their role as employees of public owners. This is achieved through appropriate education, training, experience, license, professional engineering practice and continuing professional development.
11.0 CONCLUSION
The engineering practice like the construction industry is the agent of social and economic development, the barometer of economic activities and a very large employer of labour in Nigeria. It accounts for over 60% of the total capital investment. It is the largest employer of labour (think of all the electrical, mechanical, civil, chemical and computer jobs in industries).
Health, Safety and environment, which is concerned with life and property must be taken serious in this profession. Safety procedures are necessary to prevent accidents, diseases and harmful effects on the health of the public at large arising from the activities in the industry on site and its environs or off site.
Good HSE management is visible in a country through the quality of the professional ethics of the professionals, engineers inclusive and the level of her health values and the state of her environment, that is, her level of cleanliness (personal hygiene and public sanitation).
It can only be developed through personal commitment, willingness and self-sacrifice because of the long and short run benefits therein. HSE management habit starts with safety consciousness. Safety consciousness dwells with each and every one of us and should be taken along to our professional practices.
People should recognize that their health and well-being are related to the quality of their environment and should apply thoughtful principles to attempt to improve the quality of their environment.
As Engineers, we should lead others in being safety conscious at all times and refraining from doing anything that may result to accident. We should apply safety measures to all our daily activities and take our safety and that of others around us as our responsibilities especially in our practices.
Finally, as Engineers we should pursue sustainable Health, Safety & environmental management and make it part and parcel of our engineering practice today for the continued relevance of our profession tomorrow. It is only when this is done that our professional ethics will be meaningful knowing fully well that the products of our professional practices have great impact on the lives of the entire citizens of this country.
Health, Safety & Environmental management habit is therefore not only necessary and but remains a vital ingredient of our professional ethics in engineering practice in Nigeria and elsewhere and this must be sustained always by all.

Choosing a profession in your life is one of the most important decisions that one has to make. As far as engineering is concerned it is one of the most sought-after professions. Engineering is a reputed profession and the opportunities are virtually endless in this field for skilled engineers.
Engineering can be performed in any of the main streams of civil, production, electronics, mechanical, electrical, information and technology or computer science. Computers and Information technology consists of the hardware and software knowledge related to computers. Electronics deals with all electronic devices and circuits. Mechanical deals with machines and civil is all about construction of building or roads. Architecture consists of drawing and making the plans of different buildings or any monuments. Therefore, before choosing any of the fields one must thing of his or her interests.
Engineer Job
In developed countries, opportunity for information and technology-based engineeringjobs are expansive. The internet has revolutionized our world. Most engineering projects are handled with the help of computers and the Internet. Fields like web design or web development is a popular field in itself. By learning computer languages like C++,.NET or Java engineers can find themselves working in this field.
Engineering Job Opportunities
For mechanical engineering too there is also lots of future scope as the new machines are always being invented. Mechanical engineering is also known as mother of engineering as it was the first engineering to exist. Even the architecture and civil engineering fields are excellent prospects as the need for construction of buildings will always exist.
On the other hand, engineering has always been a highly-contested area for students to start entering the work area, and this has been confounded in recent years by the economic problems besetting the world. Large engineering projects are fewer on the ground - except in rapidly expanding countries like China. Of course, these countries have their own engineers, and students in these countries are also under pressure to excel in school before they can get a foot on the ladder.
Getting an engineeringjob is now more of a long-haul; not every engineer is employed immediately out of University. Excellent grades will help, but prospective engineers have to work hard to appear head and shoulders above their peers. More and more students are using professional companies that can help their C.V. look better, and are looking for more esoteric places to find an engineeringjob after completing their training.

Mechanical engineers are trained to apply physics and science principles to mechanical systems. They design, manufacture, and analyze these systems. It is often a branch of engineering that looks at how heat can be used to make power in machines in order to produce, design, or operate. As far as engineering goes, the mechanical version is one of the oldest.
If you want to be an engineer of any sort, you will want to understand how mechanics work. You will also need a background in science and perhaps even thermodynamics. These types of engineers use these principles in addition to computers and other tools in order to design or analyze equipment and machinery.
Engineer Job
Engineers in the mechanical field deal with heating and cooling systems, vehicles that have motors, airplanes, boats, medical machinery, and plenty of other things. This profession started with the industrial revolution but it has certainly evolved in modern times. Sometimes mechanical fields of engineering can overlap with other types of engineering such as aerospace, civil, electrical, and more.
Mechanical Engineering Jobs and What They Consist Of
Mechanical engineeringjobs are in high demand and there are many options for someone with the right skills and education. Last year, there were about 1.6 million jobs for mechanical engineers in the United States. These jobs are growing quickly and there may be 6% more mechanical engineeringjobs next year. If you are trying to decide what profession you want to enter into, engineering is a great choice. You will need plenty of education and experience, but once you have those things under your belt, you will have lots of job options in front of you.
Most people with the right experience, education, and resume can earn ,000 or more when they begin in mechanical engineeringjobs. The median income is ,000 and many can make more than 0,000 per year. Mechanical engineers are employed in many different industries, though most work for manufacturing firms or consulting companies.
There are many websites online that can help you find jobs. It may be hard to find specific work if you visit the normal job sites, but there are specific websites that specialize in listing jobs for mechanical engineers. When you visit these sites you can sometimes post your resume, or simply search for jobs in your area or throughout the country. The Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology defines industrial engineering as: the profession in which a knowledge of the mathematical and natural sciences gained by study, experience and practice is applied with judgment to develop ways to utilize economically, the materials and forces of nature for the benefit of mankind concerned with the design, improvement and installation of integrated systems of people, materials, equipment and energy. It draws upon specialized knowledge and skill in the mathematical, physical and social sciences together with the principles and methods of engineering analysis and design to specify, predict and evaluate the results to be obtained from such systems.
History
Engineer Job
The origins of industrial engineering can be traced back to many different sources. Fredrick Winslow Taylor is most often considered as the father of industrial engineering even though all his ideas where not original. Some of the preceding influences may have been Adam Smith, Thomas Malthus, David Ricardo and John Stuart Mill. All of their works provided classical liberal explanations for the successes and limitations of the Industrial Revolution.
The History Of Industrial Engineering
Another major contributor to the field was Charles W. Babbage. a mathematics professor. One of his major contributions to the field was his book On the Economy of Machinery and Manufacturers in 1832. In this book he discusses many different topics dealing with manufacturing, a few of which will be extremely familiar to an IE. Babbage discusses the idea of the learning curve, the division of task and how learning is affected, and the effect of learning on the generation of waste.
In the late nineteenth century more developments where being made that would lead to the formalization of industrial engineering. Henry R. Towne stressed the economic aspect of an engineer's job. Towne belonged to the American Society of Mechanical Engineers (ASME) as did many other early American pioneers in this new field. The IE handbook says the, "ASME was the breeding ground for industrial engineering. Towne along with Fredrick A. Halsey worked on developing and presenting wage incentive plans to the ASME. It was out of these meetings that the Halsey plan of wage payment developed. The purpose was to increase the productivity of workers without negatively affecting the cost of production. The plan suggested that some of the gains be shared with the employees.. This is one early example of one profit sharing plan.
Henry L. Gantt belonged to the ASME and presented papers to the ASME on topics such as cost, selection of workers, training, good incentive plans, and scheduling of work. He is the originator of the Gantt chart, currently the most popular chart used in scheduling of work.
hat would Industrial Engineering be without mentioning Fredrick Winslow Taylor. Taylor is probably the best known of the pioneers in industrial engineering. His work, like others, covered topics such as the organization of work by management, worker selection, training, and additional compensation for those individuals that could meet the standard as developed by the company through his methods.
The Gilbreths are accredited with the development of time and motion studies. Frank Bunker Gilbreth and his wife Dr. Lillian M. Gilbreth worked on understanding fatigue, skill development, motion studies, as well as time studies. Lillian Gilbreth had a Ph.D. in psychology which helped in understanding the many people issues. One of the most significant things the Gilbrethss did was to classify the basic human motions into seventeen types, some effective and some non-effective. They labeled the table of classification therbligs. Effective therbligs are useful in accomplishing work and non-effective therbligs are not. Gilbreth concluded that the time to complete an effective therblig can be shortened but will be very hard to eliminate. On the other hand non-effective therbligs should be completely eliminated if possible.
In 1948, the American Institute for Industrial Engineers (AIIE), was opened for the first time and began to give a professional authenticity for the practicing engineers. Up to this time industrial engineers really had no specific place in the hierarchy of a company. The ASME was the only other society that required its members to have an engineering degree prior to the development of the AIIE.
What is the future for Industrial Engineers? With analytical methods and the advancing technologies for the computer, modeling complex production and service systems will become more and more an every day task.
Performing a motion study. Every job can be broken down into its' fundamental work elements. The Gilbreth family found that there are seventeen of these motions. The time to complete each motion does not change. Jobs can be studied visually or through the assistance of a camera for micro-motion studies.
The environment for the workers also needs to be set up to promote efficiency of work. Tools should be placed in fixed locations to eliminate the search and selection therbligs. Work surfaces and chairs should be adjusted to the correct working heights to eliminate stress. Whenever possible, gravity feeders should be used to deliver parts to the correct location. The worker's tools should be designed to eliminate multiple cuts. Adjustment handles should be designed to maximize the operator's mechanical advantage.
Performing a time study. Without a standard the company will find it hard to estimate lead-time on their products. Times very greatly when the employee does not know what the expectation of company is. In order to correct this problem the IE will develop a fair standard expectation for each operation. It has been estimated that 12% of a company's total cost comes from direct labor. Another 43% of cost comes from the material cost. The other 45% is spent in overhead. So the idea that the largest productivity gains can be felt on the floor does not hold up in this light. A good time study will take into account the unavoidable delays, fatigue, and to an extent, outside interferences. Time for wasteful steps, such as searching for tools, will not be included in the final standard. The expectation is that the workplace will be designed to accommodate the work and will be free from this type of waste.
Set-Up Times Set up time is the amount of time it takes to begin producing different parts on a machine. If set-up times remain large the company will operate with high levels of work in progress and finished goods tying up the companies valuable capital. Companies that fail to reduce their set-up times have a tendency to look sluggish in regards to their customers.
Cost An IE will generally be responsible for coming up with a cost analysis on the equipment purchase. There are a several ways of coming up with this. Lifehow long the machine is expected to last when developing the cost analysis.
Efficiency The traditional way of looking at efficiency was to keep the machine running at a 100% The idea was the cost of the machine could be spread out over the amount of time it was kept running. The higher the machines efficiency, time running / time available, the better the accounting numbers looked in regards to machine cost.
Material The IE is concerned with the delivery and flow of material throughout the plant, often the plant has evolved as the company has.
Lot size To allow the manufacturer to stay flexible the production lot sizes should be minimalized. This will only be economical after the reduction of machine set-ups have been achieved.
Inventory Levels Since inventory is capital that cannot be converted until finished and purchased by a consumer, it should be kept to a minimal. Inventories not only tie up capital but if the customer requests a change then the inventory runs the risk of becoming obsolete.
Quality The quality of the material can affect all parts of the system. Poor quality material often introduces excessive amounts of rework into each of the processes. A typical job for an IE would be to work with the quality department to set up a Quality Management system QMS.
Maintenance The amount of maintenance that the machine is going to require is a variable that must be considered. Another issue about maintenance is whether or not the staff on hand will need to be retrained.

"The brilliant minds have the power to make or break the society. In the case of electrical engineers they can help build a community that is capable of independently make use of electricity in productive and positive ways." Many people have actually heard of this term but not everyone knows exactly what the job entails except that it pays a lot of money. For those who are interested to know deeper about the job, spend a few minutes in reading this article to help you understand better the benefits as well as the responsibilities of an electrical engineer.
The primary role of an electrical engineer is to design and sometimes create products that would be useful in the residential community as well as in the business sector. These products are the ones that work with the use of electricity. A brilliant person will most likely create and dedicate his life to a single invention in order to create a perfect product. A clearer example of what these brilliant people work on is the ever useful mobile phone which is now creating a great wave not only in our country but all around the world. These days men cannot leave their homes without their mobile phone; they consider this gadget to be a part of their necessity. In the field of the medicine an x-ray can be considered as an electrical engineer's eureka.
Engineer Job
The first thing an electrical engineer would do before starting a project would be to think about what is the purpose why the tool or gadget is being created. Once he has made up his mind as to what the gadget is intended for he then proceeds to the next step which is to make a blueprint or a written plan of the electronics' wiring. Once there is already a working plan for its wiring circuitry the next stage would be to create a prototype of the tool this is to ensure that the gadget will successfully work as intended. Once there is already a prototype for the said tool it then undergoes a series of tests to check its workability as well as its functionality. By testing the product the engineer will know if everything he has designed the product for is working properly. Once there are any alterations needed for the tool he will then concentrate on that to make it perfect.

There are many types of engineeringjobs. Most, if not all, require a person to have some creative skills, as well as mathematical and scientific expertise. The types of engineers are broadly classified as mechanical, electrical, civil, and chemical. There are many subcategories. In all of these fields, people must try to design and build things to solve problems and, hopefully, make society better. They must do this by keeping in mind just how feasible their design will be to build and if it is worth the cost.
A mechanical engineer is one who has been trained to design mechanical systems, and practices designing mechanical systems. They may work on vacuum technology, power systems, transportation products, weapon systems, aircraft, kinematic chains, vibration isolation, or any other physical machine. An electrical engineer works on a rather large number of electrical items and systems. This includes telecommunications, computers, fiber optics, electronic circuits, electronic devices, electromagnetic devices, generators, circuits, and many others.
Engineer Job
If somebody goes into civil engineering they will likely help to design and construct structures the public uses daily. They also work on structures for private individuals. Their job description may involve large buildings, bridges, roads, water supply, railroads, water treatment systems and other structures we all use. A chemical engineer works with chemical processing, usually on a large scale. They may develop new types of fuel, which are hopefully better and less polluting than what people are using now.
Types of Engineering Jobs and What They Involve
All of these engineeringjobs usually require a large amount of education. How much will depend largely on the field and subcategory one chooses. A relatively new growing field is software engineering. In this field, a person will help improve software in hopes of making it better and cheaper. Someone in an environmental field works with water treatment and its impact on the environment. If somebody is in the agricultural field, they might be involved in chemical or mechanical engineering, depending on if they are making machines for agricultural purposes, or something animal or plant biology related. They help with devising better ways to make food available for people and livestock.
A person's interest will help them decide which field to pursue. If somebody grew up playing with boats, they may like marine engineering where they can try to build a better boat. If somebody likes to play with Legos and blocks, they may like to go into the architectural field. There they can use their passion for building to make marvelous structures and overcome many building problems. They will also work on making structures that are safe from all kinds of weather and natural disasters.
All of these fields of engineeringjobs are involved in making things better. A sales engineer is almost like a glorified sales person, but they are highly educated and more able to help consumers make good purchasing decisions and use their products. They are the ones who help with troubleshooting today's troublesome technology. These jobs may take a lot of training, but the right people can get this done.

Every profession has its jokes. For instance about economists: ten economists appear up with eleven opinions on the economy. An archetype of an engineering antic is this one: what's the aberration amid a automated engineer and civilian engineer? One builds bombs the added builds targets. (1)
Jokes generally reflect some accuracy as they tend to aggrandize some capital appropriate of addition or in this a professional.
One engineer about doesn't accomplish an engineering culture. And again there are altered sorts of engineering professions, for archetype the computer engineer - advice technology - who is designing, building, programming... computer systems.
Engineer Job
The adage that is generally heard in this ambience is: "you cannot fix bodies in the aforementioned way that you can fix machines."
Some Characteristics of an Engineering Culture
Although we generally appoint in amusing engineering, the engineering accent is not appropriately applicative in areas alfresco their specific domain; bodies do not acknowledge in the aforementioned way as machines do.
What is this analogue of the engineer?
"Problems charge solutions." Technology is consistently helpful, but generally not demography into annual that differences in use and claimed situations in which the technology can be acclimated or will (not) be used.
In the advice arrangement breadth -- computer engineering -- this affair comes up back implementing a new advice system. The botheration is generally than the accepted alignment will accept subjected to the appearance of the system, admitting it would be added animal that the arrangement capacity to the demands of the organization.
For engineers it is actual important that they assignment carefully with marketers, physiologists and added professionals who can construe the raw functions of a new apparatus to advantageous accessories for people.
Another breadth area the engineering ability may account abrasion with added cultures in organizations is on change. Engineers generally anticipate that aggregate is possible; aggregate can be body and sometimes instantly. Here too the animal alternation is the problem; bodies generally resent change and stick to old habits.
The engineer wants to apparatus change faster than alignment is Able to administer (change).
