Career Objective

The resume we have discussed previously in its entirety however the objective has come up recently as a subject of "requirement". People want to know, do I need an objective? If I do, what does it need to say? If I do not, do I replace it with something else? Personally, I think it is a matter of choice. Objectives require a certain style and dictate what one is looking to do moving forward. I find them limiting in that they tell someone what you are looking to do, and if the objective is written narrowly or does not include certain verbiage, people that review your background will pass you by for certain opportunities as they do not align with your objective. The summary I see as a valued part of the resume and is a strong replacement for the objective.

Summary means: Presenting the substance in a condensed form; concise or; a presentation of the substance of a body of material in a condensed form or by reducing it to its main points; an abstract. This is key in understanding the meaning behind what you are writing and how it is to be written. Facts, bullet points written in a paragraph form that show immediate value and highlight what is being brought to the table. This is not a section to explain or get into the detail of your background or personality. It is to elude to the reader your importance and engage them enough to continue reading the resume. Anything longer than 4-5 sentences will be too much for this section.

Engineer Job

Get the attention of the reader quickly. Lead with something that provides substance and aligns itself with the position you are applying. Customizing resumes is a crucial part of the application process and there should be a review of the role previous to sending any resumes. Not all positions require the same skills and the summary is a clear vision in the beginning of your resume eluding to what the reader might see next. If that summary is poorly written or not in line with the general scope of the role, your resume will be discarded and the hiring manager will move on. Be safe, take your time, and write to the role and the company - do not send out blanket resumes. They are sure not to get you calls back.

Career Objective

If you are not sure how your resume sounds or if the wording is not coming out right - ask a friend. Anyone reading from a non-partisan view will offer some keen advice on how to better show yourself and sound less wordy. Stay focused, highlight your strengths, use facts and figures where you can showing concise statements of value and you will see a better response on the resumes you send out. Remember to sell yourself, not the companies you have worked for and use facts that highlight you and not the team that was working the project. Be inventive and show yourself through your resume. Boring resumes are all too common, do not catch people's attention and require little reason to head to the trash basket.

Happy writing.

The History Of Industrial Engineering

The Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology defines industrial engineering as: the profession in which a knowledge of the mathematical and natural sciences gained by study, experience and practice is applied with judgment to develop ways to utilize economically, the materials and forces of nature for the benefit of mankind concerned with the design, improvement and installation of integrated systems of people, materials, equipment and energy. It draws upon specialized knowledge and skill in the mathematical, physical and social sciences together with the principles and methods of engineering analysis and design to specify, predict and evaluate the results to be obtained from such systems.

History

Engineer Job

The origins of industrial engineering can be traced back to many different sources. Fredrick Winslow Taylor is most often considered as the father of industrial engineering even though all his ideas where not original. Some of the preceding influences may have been Adam Smith, Thomas Malthus, David Ricardo and John Stuart Mill. All of their works provided classical liberal explanations for the successes and limitations of the Industrial Revolution.

The History Of Industrial Engineering

Another major contributor to the field was Charles W. Babbage. a mathematics professor. One of his major contributions to the field was his book On the Economy of Machinery and Manufacturers in 1832. In this book he discusses many different topics dealing with manufacturing, a few of which will be extremely familiar to an IE. Babbage discusses the idea of the learning curve, the division of task and how learning is affected, and the effect of learning on the generation of waste.

In the late nineteenth century more developments where being made that would lead to the formalization of industrial engineering. Henry R. Towne stressed the economic aspect of an engineer's job. Towne belonged to the American Society of Mechanical Engineers (ASME) as did many other early American pioneers in this new field. The IE handbook says the, "ASME was the breeding ground for industrial engineering. Towne along with Fredrick A. Halsey worked on developing and presenting wage incentive plans to the ASME. It was out of these meetings that the Halsey plan of wage payment developed. The purpose was to increase the productivity of workers without negatively affecting the cost of production. The plan suggested that some of the gains be shared with the employees.. This is one early example of one profit sharing plan.

Henry L. Gantt belonged to the ASME and presented papers to the ASME on topics such as cost, selection of workers, training, good incentive plans, and scheduling of work. He is the originator of the Gantt chart, currently the most popular chart used in scheduling of work.

hat would Industrial Engineering be without mentioning Fredrick Winslow Taylor. Taylor is probably the best known of the pioneers in industrial engineering. His work, like others, covered topics such as the organization of work by management, worker selection, training, and additional compensation for those individuals that could meet the standard as developed by the company through his methods.

The Gilbreths are accredited with the development of time and motion studies. Frank Bunker Gilbreth and his wife Dr. Lillian M. Gilbreth worked on understanding fatigue, skill development, motion studies, as well as time studies. Lillian Gilbreth had a Ph.D. in psychology which helped in understanding the many people issues. One of the most significant things the Gilbrethss did was to classify the basic human motions into seventeen types, some effective and some non-effective. They labeled the table of classification therbligs. Effective therbligs are useful in accomplishing work and non-effective therbligs are not. Gilbreth concluded that the time to complete an effective therblig can be shortened but will be very hard to eliminate. On the other hand non-effective therbligs should be completely eliminated if possible.

In 1948, the American Institute for Industrial Engineers (AIIE), was opened for the first time and began to give a professional authenticity for the practicing engineers. Up to this time industrial engineers really had no specific place in the hierarchy of a company. The ASME was the only other society that required its members to have an engineering degree prior to the development of the AIIE.

What is the future for Industrial Engineers? With analytical methods and the advancing technologies for the computer, modeling complex production and service systems will become more and more an every day task.

Performing a motion study. Every job can be broken down into its' fundamental work elements. The Gilbreth family found that there are seventeen of these motions. The time to complete each motion does not change. Jobs can be studied visually or through the assistance of a camera for micro-motion studies.

The environment for the workers also needs to be set up to promote efficiency of work. Tools should be placed in fixed locations to eliminate the search and selection therbligs. Work surfaces and chairs should be adjusted to the correct working heights to eliminate stress. Whenever possible, gravity feeders should be used to deliver parts to the correct location. The worker's tools should be designed to eliminate multiple cuts. Adjustment handles should be designed to maximize the operator's mechanical advantage.

Performing a time study. Without a standard the company will find it hard to estimate lead-time on their products. Times very greatly when the employee does not know what the expectation of company is. In order to correct this problem the IE will develop a fair standard expectation for each operation. It has been estimated that 12% of a company's total cost comes from direct labor. Another 43% of cost comes from the material cost. The other 45% is spent in overhead. So the idea that the largest productivity gains can be felt on the floor does not hold up in this light. A good time study will take into account the unavoidable delays, fatigue, and to an extent, outside interferences. Time for wasteful steps, such as searching for tools, will not be included in the final standard. The expectation is that the workplace will be designed to accommodate the work and will be free from this type of waste.

Set-Up Times Set up time is the amount of time it takes to begin producing different parts on a machine. If set-up times remain large the company will operate with high levels of work in progress and finished goods tying up the companies valuable capital. Companies that fail to reduce their set-up times have a tendency to look sluggish in regards to their customers.

Cost An IE will generally be responsible for coming up with a cost analysis on the equipment purchase. There are a several ways of coming up with this. Lifehow long the machine is expected to last when developing the cost analysis.

Efficiency The traditional way of looking at efficiency was to keep the machine running at a 100% The idea was the cost of the machine could be spread out over the amount of time it was kept running. The higher the machines efficiency, time running / time available, the better the accounting numbers looked in regards to machine cost.

Material The IE is concerned with the delivery and flow of material throughout the plant, often the plant has evolved as the company has.

Lot size To allow the manufacturer to stay flexible the production lot sizes should be minimalized. This will only be economical after the reduction of machine set-ups have been achieved.

Inventory Levels Since inventory is capital that cannot be converted until finished and purchased by a consumer, it should be kept to a minimal. Inventories not only tie up capital but if the customer requests a change then the inventory runs the risk of becoming obsolete.

Quality The quality of the material can affect all parts of the system. Poor quality material often introduces excessive amounts of rework into each of the processes. A typical job for an IE would be to work with the quality department to set up a Quality Management system QMS.

Maintenance The amount of maintenance that the machine is going to require is a variable that must be considered. Another issue about maintenance is whether or not the staff on hand will need to be retrained.

The Advantages to a College Degree for Today's Job Seekers

A college degree is an advantage in today's workforce. The number and of jobs available for college graduates is much greater and they often have higher salary and benefits.

Availability of Jobs

Engineer Job

The number of jobs that require a college degree or where a college education is an advantage is increasing. In previous generations, there were many levels of jobs available for those without a college education or in some cases, even a high school diploma. However now many of these jobs simply do not exist any longer, or now require college education.

The Advantages to a College Degree for Today's Job Seekers

Industrial jobs, trades and skilled labor were more prevalent before the rise of computer technology. Now many industries require a smaller workforce because of technological advances. Even though not as many assembly line workers are needed, there are many jobs available in engineering, management and business administration in which a college education is an advantage.

Types of Jobs

The advantages of a college degree in scientific, manufacturing and engineering fields are very strong. College students can now study highly specialized science related degrees that apply directly to business settings. Safety engineering, environmental science and DNA analytics are examples of highly specialized fields that have become in demand in just the past 10 years or so.

One of the advantages of a college education is that students become aware of many subjects and fields that they never would have considered without going to college. Students are required to take a variety of basic education courses such as math, sciences, literature and basic computing. Electives are also required and students may take a course that just sounds interesting or appealing to them. Often students discover during one of these courses that they have a talent and/or passion for a subject and begin to understand its potential in the job marketplace.

While obtaining a specialized degree is necessary in some fields, sometimes just having a college education is an advantage, regardless of the field of study. Employers want to know that their employees have a well rounded basic education. The advantages of a college degree will be proven when your resume is chosen over those who did not make the commitment to complete their education.

Salary & Benefits

The advantage of a college degree equals to higher wages and salaries. In the Winter 2004-05 Occupational Outlook Quarterly, The US Department of Labor reported that "In 2003, workers who had a bachelor's degree had median weekly earnings of 0, compared with 4 a week for high school graduates--that's a difference of 6 per week, or a 62 percent jump in median earnings." These figures are a bold statement that the advantage of a college degree is its increased earning power.

Job seekers will also find that positions that may not actually require a college education will still pay more to those who have a degree. Jobs seekers with a college education will still earn higher salaries, even when the degree is not directly required for the job.

The jobs that do not require a college education often have fewer benefits. These jobs often provide no retirement or health insurance benefits which are imperative to financial security and the stability of the family.

The Advantage of a College Degree: Conclusion

Attending and graduating from college is the best way to prepare for a career that pays well and provides a means to a secure future. If you are determined and hard working, you can complete your education and begin a career that will provide now and pave the way to a secure retirement.

Top 5 Professional Careers in Scuba Diving

Scuba diving is not a regular sport or recreational activity. In fact, advanced and specialty courses in open circuit scuba diving have opened doors to established professional careers that require technical, underwater diving expertise. Engineers, scientists and environmentalists are also acquiring scuba diving skills to meet the demands of their occupation. The article lists a few professions that require scuba diving in the course of work.
Underwater Engineering. Professional divers perform engineering work in lieu of the exploration and production activities of the oil industry. The job takes advantage of the skills of a scuba diver for the maintenance of submerged oil platforms. Civil engineering projects also hire professional scuba divers for the conduct of underwater surveys or when building harbors and bridges. Marine Biological Research. Scientists engaged in this field of scientific study submit to extensive scuba diving training to be able to conduct underwater research, particularly on the biodiversity of marine life. Meanwhile, environmentalists have also found scuba diving skills to be relevant in the protection of marine habitats; where frequent scuba diving is performed for the conduct of clean-up projects and periodic reef surveys. HAZMAT Diving. Short for hazardous materials diving, this is regarded as the most dangerous type of professional diving. The environmental conditions pertinent to the job pose a great health risk to the scuba diver. For this reason, employment is limited to highly skilled and experienced scuba divers who should likewise be in excellent physical state. For this type of diving, scuba divers go through a series of pre-medication treatments and are geared up only in specialized scuba equipment. Decontamination following work in polluted waters is also required. HAZMAT diving is commonly performed to repair pipelines, recover bodies and lost objects, and for the purpose of underwater pollution control as well. Underwater Photography and Film Making. Television and film producers invest part of their budgets to shoot underwater footages that may be relevant to a movie or documentary on production. Now this activity requires the services of professional scuba divers. This is one of the many jobs available that recreational divers can easily take on to earn extra income out of their scuba diving skills. Military, Navy and Police. The military and navy likewise train their personnel in the conduct of offensive operations such as underwater infiltration and demolition. In this case, scuba diving is significant in the recovery of underwater evidence for police profiling.

With the range of career options mentioned, learning how to scuba dive will come in handy to one intending to make scuba diving as an occupation. If you are planning to take recreational scuba diving to the next level (as a profession), invest on good quality scuba equipment. Start with the H2Odyssey Thruster Open Heel Fins which is designed to make you move swiftly underwater using minimal leg strokes. For a versatile dive suit, there is the Aeris Rio 3/2 Jumpsuit [http://www.scubasuppliers.com/site/1408308/product/60.0321.XX] that offers you full protection and comfort while diving varied water environments.

New Graduate Nursing Jobs - A Word of Encouragement and a Bit of Advice

"There are no jobs out there for us!" "I thought nursing was supposed to be such a sure thing for job-security, but I can't get a job anywhere!" "All the positions are for experienced nurses only...how am I supposed to get any experience if no one will hire me?" "Nursing shortage? What nursing shortage? If there's such a shortage, why aren't there any jobs?"

This is a typical lament of the newly-graduated nurse, looking for his or her very first job out of school, at least in some parts of the country, and in some situations. I believe that some encouragement is needed, as well as some "sage advice."

Engineer Job

The job market, in some places, is very tight. While it is disheartening, we need to realize that this isn't completely new. Nursing, as a profession, has been here before, to a degree. When I first began my career, nurses were being laid off, allied professions were being cut...this was over 2 decades ago now. New grads and both current and future nursing students: You're caught in the middle of a really weird situation right now. Trust me...there is a nursing shortage! And it is going to get worse.

New Graduate Nursing Jobs - A Word of Encouragement and a Bit of Advice

The problem seems to be that, like every other business around, hospitals are having to make the same gut-wrenching budget cuts as everyone else. It's hitting so many areas of nursing right now...students, faculty, schools, hospitals...everyone is affected by the current economic situation. Hospitals, whether they're short on nurses or not at the moment, are dealing with a cash-crisis. A brand new nurse, fresh out of school--no matter how many "A's" you got in nursing school, no matter how many articles you've written above and beyond, no matter how many volunteer/student-work/extra-credit hours you've logged--a brand new nurse will take close to a full year to mentor and precept into an independent RN. They will spend tens of thousands of dollars on you, above and beyond the salary they pay you, just to get you to the place where you actually "earn" that salary. Don't be offended...the hospital typically knows that you are a great investment! These just aren't typical times right now.

You may not believe it right now, but most of the skills of nursing are learned after you get out of school! In school, you are learning the "science" of nursing, the "theory" of nursing. Upon graduation, you will learn how to apply that science and theory in the real world of nursing. Your clinical rotations were not the real world. Nursing requires judgment skills; judgment skills are the result of experience backed by the theory and science you learned in school. It just takes time.

OK, so...what can you do? First, recognize that you DO have options:

1. Realize that your first job is just that...it's your first job. Few new grads, whether they're nurses, lawyers, engineers, or architects, land their dream job right out of school. When you say that there are "no jobs anywhere" in your area, is it really NO jobs? Or have you limited yourself in any way by not considering jobs in, shall we call them, "less than desirable" specialties? I really disliked my first year of nursing! But you know what? It was only my first year. Once it was over, I was the "experienced RN" that hospitals were crying out for. I named all my future positions, where and when I wanted them. But that first year, in what amounted to a "glorified nursing home" was not what I had EVER imagined for myself. So...have you really looked everywhere?

2. I have read more than one nursing student posting comments online about how upset they were that there were "NO JOBS" out there, only to then read that she is a senior in nursing school or a brand new graduate nurse who wants to go on to become a nurse anesthetist, and to get into that program she has to have at least a year of ER or ICU experience...and "no one will hire me." To such students and grads, may I tell you in the kindest way that if any hospital does hire you into their ER or ICU as a new grad, they are setting themselves...and very possibly you..up for a possible lawsuit because of the dire consequences your lack of experience and immature professional judgements may cause someone?

I worked 10 years of my career in critical care...ALL areas of critical care...and new grads simply do not have the knowledge, skill, or judgment abilities to work in these areas. Period. Want to become a Nurse Anesthetist? Then graduate nursing school, take whatever job you need to to get working as a nurse, so you can actually begin to function as a "real" nurse (not just a student nurse!) at the bedside, fulltime. Learn. Learn all you can in that first job. Be the best new nurse you can be.

Get the best peer reviews. Get the best reviews from your Unit Manager. Be the nurse the patients and their families write letters to the hospital directors about (good letters, of course)! Then, at the end of that year, go apply for a job in the ER. Go get a spot in the ICU. Believe me, when you're in there, you'll be starting all over again with the learning curve! But when you're in, you're in...now, remember what you did that first year in that first position? Do it again. At the end of that year, go apply for that slot in the Nurse Anesthetist program. Smile...you'll have earned it, because you worked for it. Well worth it!

Again, few new graduates, whatever their profession, land their "dream job" fresh out of college. Most new grads expect to start, oh, somewhere near the bottom, and work their way up, gaining experience, wisdom, and leadership skills along the way that will be used in their futures. In nursing, we are fortunate...the bottom isn't that far from the top. It doesn't typically take more than a year of doing what you'd rather not be doing in order to shoot straight to where you do want to be. So just get started.

2. Let's say you really have looked at every hospital, every nursing home, every assisted living center in your area, and there are NO jobs. You have a decision to make. I tell my own kids this all the time: you can either choose where you want to live, and then work at whatever you like best that is available there, or you can choose what you'd love to do, and then go wherever you have to in order to do it. It's just that simple. With a career in nursing, If you wait long enough and are willing to do what it takes at first (probably not too long, but be ready for a year or so), you'll probably be able to have BOTH.

Jobs ARE out there. Go where they are, get your feet wet and become the experienced, independent RN everyone's looking for! Do what it takes! It's WORTH IT!
