Online data entry can start as a low skill position, depending on the type, and sometimes be completed as efficiently at home as in an office. Thus almost naturally, there tends to be a greater supply of ready unskilled workers than positions available.

Unfortunately the demand has been partly addressed by scammers touting grand promises (often related to "pay per click" advertising at worker expense), so a warning is perhaps the first thing to note in finding work-at-home online data entering jobs.

This is not the place to go into a full length discussion on how to root out scam or undesirable "opportunities," but we can make a few suggestions, like taking a look at the numbers of complaints and how they were resolved (plus the rating justifications) when looking up a website on the Better Business Bureau site bbb.org.

Furthermore, there are some review sites that can prove useful, but be aware that some of these sites may have a financial stake in some of the companies or offers reviewed. Try to find differing review perspectives. Comments by site viewers can be less biased or can just be unfair rants or give incomplete pictures, so again where possible, try to get more than one perspective... and from multiple people. Look for patterns or revealing sentences.

Sometimes further information can be found via Whois.net, scambusters.org and ftc.gov. And the only thing I will add is that you should be especially careful at researching offers and companies that you find attractive; remember the motto, "If it sounds too good to be true, it probably is."

II. On fees before job offers...

A further word of caution is that sites that try to sell you something in order to get an at-home data inputting job are not seeking to employee you, at least not directly. Why would an employer want money from those they purport to pay for work?

Some of these products and services are legitimate for the right customer, but if there is any vagueness in the reasons for the fee or if the promises are unrealistic, beware. Some of these are notorious scams.

Among possible legitimate products and services are educational or training ones to prepare customers for a particular job market (depending on the quality and relevance of the material). Some job boards also require a fee from job seekers (e.g., flexjobs.com), ostensibly so that the site owners can do a more thorough job of weeding out less reputable employers and positions. Or there may be fees for certain equipment (or software) required for a job working from home.

Just recognize such offers as something other than direct job offers and get enough information to decide for yourself if they are worth it to you.

III. Online job boards, specialty sites

But the good news is that there is a real demand for online data entry work and there are genuine positions out there. The primary function of online job boards is to connect employers looking to hire workers with those looking for the kind of work employers want--not that all employers posting an ad are to be trusted. But company size, age, and reputation can give clues.

Then there are companies which by nature require a fair number of data entry people or which act as clearing houses for short term data entry work. A few possible sources are absolutedocs.com, virtualassistants.com, tigerfish.com, and idictate.com.

Speed and accuracy are "musts," of course. And sometimes the field of opportunity is widened by additional skills such as familiarity with medical terminology, facility with standard computer office software like Excel and Powerpoint, and administrative skill and experience. Sites that do not seem to demand much in the way of skills and experience from their potential employees and freelance workers may be suspect as to their value and reputation.

IV. Search engine use

There are often search functions on job board sites, sometimes with advanced search functions. One may be able to be more specific, for example, with geographical location or jargon terms.

On Google or other search engines too, one may use multiple words or put some words in quotes for more targeted searches. Or try eliminating unimportant words if there are no results. Use a dictionary or thesaurus and try synonyms. Transcription jobs. Data input. Data entry keyers. Caption typing employment. Work at home stenographer. Online database helpers. Whatever you can come up with.

And keep at it. There is a work at home data entry job out there for you.

New Or Used Ford Ka?

I never used to make New Year resolutions. The dream of owning a Ford GT was never more likely to happen if I made it my resolution to get one and the mundane day-to-day stuff seemed so in control to me that I didn't feel I needed to change anything. All this altered a few years ago when I woke up on 1 January with yet another blistering headache ready to make my brain pop. I vowed never to drink again and I didn't...for three days. There were other things on my list that I did stick to like getting a better job, getting in shape (although that's going back on the list this year) and to start a band and record a demo - it was a successful year.

Since then I've religiously stuck to a few key resolutions, one of which this year will be to change my car (it's a sort of self improvement). Ford will also be hoping your resolution will be to ditch your used Ford Ka or alternative and buy a new one when it launches in January. There is quite a major problem that Ford face however and I liken it to the rock band The Darkness.

For those unfamiliar with The Darkness they were formed in the early nineties by brothers Justin and Dan Hawkins. Recruiting two old friends on bass and drums respectively, The Darkness wrote songs that harked back to the glam metal and classic rock of Led Zeppelin, T-Rex, AC/DC and Queen. In a world where hip hop, R 'n' B and shiny pop were ruling the airwaves, The Darkness in their spandex and with their cheesy rock were destined to be a massive failure. Yet somehow, amazingly, they weren't.

In 2003 they burst onto an unsuspecting public and guitar music was reborn. Their debut album went to number one for four weeks in the UK and sold 1.5 million copies. They toured the world with superstars like Metallica, won two Brit Awards in 2004, had a massive Christmas single and were on every form of media constantly. Yet when it came to following up this unexpected success, they were unable to do so. Their bassist quit, singer Justin went into rehab and their second album flopped, resulting in the record company cancelling their contract.

Ford are in the same boat with the Ka (albeit a less musical one). Part of Ford's 'New Edge' design philosophy in 1996, the Ka was so futuristically styled when it launched that it had the potential to send any prospective customers running away screaming. I was on the verge of calling NASA the first time I saw one. Even today the old car looks fresh so it's no wonder that Ford have let the original Ka design run for 13 years.

Yet people didn't run away - they loved it. With a combination of styling that was ahead of its time but appreciated, good build quality, nippy 1.3 litre engine and neat and tidy handling - particularly around town, the Ka sold in droves. Crucially it attracted young women to the Ford brand and the Ka was so small they could carry it around it their handbags. With the Ka becoming every bit a style icon as good little car, Ford developed a brand loyalty with its Ka owners that boosted sales across its range.

Now you see the size of the new Ka's task. A used Ford Ka is ridiculously cheap and on average will be £4,000 cheaper (for a two year old model) than the new derivative. The new car is also a Fiat 500 and Panda in drag (well all the unpinnings are the same) but it doesn't look anywhere near as good. Despite it being the ugly step-sister of the Italian firm the Ka is streets ahead when it comes to the driving experience. The Ford PR guff said the new Ka had "the most exciting driving dynamics of any small car" and this is the case.

To encourage buyers you can also choose from three 'personalisation packs' for your new car: Digital Art, Grand Prix and Tattoo. What? Well basically each pack contains exterior graphics, matching coloured seat fabric colours, steering wheel and floor mats. It's clear that Ford is aiming to retain its young female customer base which considering the number of fans of it, isn't surprising.

The new Ka then, is Ford's second difficult second album and you may be better sticking with their original material. It's ironic that despite the new car being a good one, the success of its elder means that it may very well be judged a failure. Time and how well it fits inside a handbag will tell.

As a nation on edge and in the midst of the worst economic crisis since the Great Depression, many of the daily aspects reflected in "Americana" seem to have become taboo. For the past two years our stunned and gun-shy population has wandered through news of continued job losses, store closings, grim foreclosure statistics driving the economy south, and consumer confidence to all time lows.

In times of chaos and turmoil it's normal to wonder who is to blame for our collective misery as it is expected that we all seek solutions to our temporary slump. However, one unfortunate by-product of this circumstance is the blurred distinctions between actions that lead to recovery and those that caused our loss. In the real estate industry this has become most evident in the grouping of profit with greed, and investment with speculation.

Is it Wrong to Make a Profit As a Real Estate Investor?

In a recent article for the Washington Post, conservative columnist George Will writes, "Greed, we are agreed, is bad. It also is strange. It has long been included among the Seven Deadly Sins, which suggests that it is a universal and perennial facet of the human fabric." He continues on with the example of ticket brokers, like Stub Hub, to illustrate his point that the open market properly punishes greed with missed opportunities and sudden collapse due to improper timing. "Greed is worse than a moral defect, it is a cause of foolish pricing. That is why markets know it when they see it."

Without entering a conversation about regulation versus free markets I would concur that greed unchecked leads to downfall. Further, the collapse of the US housing market shows that the unfortunate side effect of unchecked greed is the collateral damage done to those who were not greedy but remain caught in the crossfire.

Profit on the other hand is a basic tenet of Capitalism and the cornerstone to our free market society. Profit is the engine that propels entrepreneurs, investors, and jobs, manufacturing, creativity, and expansion alike. In his seminal book "The Science of Getting Rich" Wallace Wattles explains that one must always give more in "Use Value" than they receive in "Cash Value." His clear yet sometimes lost point among business ventures is that a properly functioning marketplace allows for a reasonable entrepreneurial profit to those who add value to the business process. This distinctive balance lies within the intent of the business performing the service.

In illustration of this point can be found in the real estate industry by comparing investors to speculators.

Investor vs. Speculator

A real estate investor is an individual or entity that invests equity into a real estate asset for the purpose of generating income from or adding value to the existing improvements. Investors can have long term or short-term strategies. They may use their own capital or they may borrow (leverage) equity to varying degrees. Some create value by curing defects either physical (dilapidation) or financial (cash buyers with quick closings), while others employ long-term hold strategies that gather value from timing and appreciation. Yet all prudent investors share the distinction of returning to the marketplace "Use Value" for the profits or "Cash Value" they earn.

Speculators can share timing and leverage strategies with investors, yet that is where the similarities end. The intent of a speculator is not to add value to the economic engine; rather they look to take advantage of the marketplace by simply getting in line first. The speculator is driven by greed. Profit margins and financial gain are not based on business strategies that help balance supply and demand, thus making the business plan viable in the long term. Instead the speculator looks to horde or corner markets to their advantage intending to reap exceptional short term profits before quickly exiting the marketplace without regard to what is left behind.

The Soap Analogy

Most all of us bathe on a regular basis. To do so effectively we use water and some form of cleaning agent. For this example let's assume we all use soap.

If one were to plan for a shower and find all the soap gone, the reasonable response would be to go down to a convenience store (grocery store, warehouse store, or drug store) and buy another bar. Most of us would look for the best bargain or our favorite brand and gladly pay the store's asking price. For this transaction to occur we realize that some other business distributed the bars of soap in large bulk quantities to that store to accommodate our smaller purchase. Before that, a manufacturer bought raw materials mixing together bars of soap to later package and sell to that same distributor.

Each step along the way a business invested their capital to provide a service both for the entity before them and customer who comes after them in the economic process. For this privilege and purpose each investment entity earns a tidy profit. By charging too much for their service they lose customers and go out of business. By contrast, not charging enough leads to loss, inhibiting the ability to remain a viable and profitable concern. Either way, free market forces act to keep profits in balance and all of us clean. Further we support these profits and welcome the service provided by continuing to buy bars of soap.

But what happens when someone only seeks to take advantage of system for the short term and their own personal gain. Let's imagine we've all taken a two-week cruise across the Pacific Ocean. Forced to share close quarters for an extended period of time it would quickly become apparent that good hygiene practices are necessary to the shared enjoyment of the passengers. Again, enter the need for soap.

For this example let's assume that the passengers did not realize this need until the boat was long to sea and the boat's sundry shop was grossly under-supplied with the sudsy necessity. Enter the speculator. Realizing that other passengers have nowhere to turn, too little supply and extraordinary demand, he quickly gathers all of the available soap and waits for the pandemonium to begin. Beyond the myriad of possible disasters awaiting the group one outcome remains certain - Imbalance and market failure.

The Real Estate World

Examples of our ship bound soap pirate were seen all across America this past real estate cycle. From Brooklyn to Las Vegas, Florida to California speculators bought or reserved condominium units before homeowners could find their place in line. Speculators bought income property that did not earn enough income to support the prices paid intending to sell it in short order by way of rapid appreciation. Eventually the music stopped. The result - Imbalance and market failure.

Yet amid the ashes born of greed and speculation, comes the profitable investor intent on creating value within the economic system. Recognizing a need and providing a valuable service, the investor uses free markets to find balance in the economy and provide profits for its coffers. Identifying "Use Value" in exchange for "Cash Value" the profitable investor solves problems, creates jobs, provides a service, fuels growth, inspires innovation, and is the cornerstone to the American Capitalist System.

That is never wrong.
