Mechanical engineering is also known as mother of engineering as it was the first engineering to exist. Even the architecture and civil engineering fields are excellent prospects as the need for construction of buildings will always exist.
On the other hand, engineering has always been a highly-contested area for students to start entering the work area, and this has been confounded in recent years by the economic problems besetting the world. Large engineering projects are fewer on the ground - except in rapidly expanding countries like China. Of course, these countries have their own engineers, and students in these countries are also under pressure to excel in school before they can get a foot on the ladder.
Getting an engineering job is now more of a long-haul; not every engineer is employed immediately out of University. Excellent grades will help, but prospective engineers have to work hard to appear head and shoulders above their peers. More and more students are using professional companies that can help their C.V. look better, and are looking for more esoteric places to find an engineering job after completing their training.
