Jobs in Oil Field - What Are the Top Paying Jobs Today?

On August 26 2008, CNN Money reported that oil drillers are scrambling for workers. Too many years of under-investment in oil rigs and workers alike, coupled with the surge in oil prices over the last few years has led to a major shortage of experienced workers in oil fields at all levels. Noble Corporation, one of the world's largest offshore drilling companies, has 1500 rig job openings in the next 2 years for their 5 new oil rigs. Every oil company is deploying new oil rigs everywhere from the Gulf of Mexico and the deep water off Brazil to the coasts of Africa and Saudi Arabia to meet today's increased demand for oil.

Filling the jobs in these offshore oil fields is proving to be a major challenge. Despite sky-high salaries in the range of ,000 to ,000 even for new hires, there are not many takers for these offshore jobs. There are several reasons for this reluctance:
Not many people are willing to live in the middle of the ocean on an oil rig Extremes of temperature, either extremely cold (most deep ocean oil rigs) or extremely hot (Africa), and sometimes both (the deserts of Saudi Arabia) The demanding work schedule - 12 hours on, 12 hours off, 7 days a week for 2-4 weeks straight Political volatility and armed violence, for example rebels and insurgents in Nigeria and other African nations, potential terrorists in Saudi Arabia Physical danger from storms like the recent Gustav and Hurricane Katrina in 2005 Dangerous accidents like the 1988 Piper Alpha drilling rig in the North Sea - 167 of the 226 men on board died when the oil rig caught fire

Engineer Job

Predictably, the highest salaries drawn in oil companies are the executives with titles starting with "C", like CEO, CFO, etc. Then you have the VPs and top salesmen. But what about jobs and salaries for new hires? Well, in February, The Wall Street Journal reported that new petroleum engineering graduates received starting salaries of ,000 to 0,000, not including various perks and signing bonuses. This demand is in no danger of peaking anytime soon. Oil companies are hiring petroleum engineering freshman students as summer interns, paying as much as .50 an hour. Texas Tech reports its 2008 graduating seniors will receive an average salary of 0,000.

Jobs in Oil Field - What Are the Top Paying Jobs Today?

Geologists, too, are in great demand. The American Geologic Institute reports that the average starting salary for a geologist fresh out of school is ,300, up from ,000 in 2003. At their April meeting, the American Association of Petroleum Geologists reported that graduate students (Masters and PhD) were receiving salaries of ,000 to 0,000. The good news for job seekers is that the demand for geologists for is unlikely to be filled anytime soon. The American Geological Institute reports that out of 20,000 geology undergraduates, only 2,800 attain their BSc after 4 years of study. In addition, many of today's oil industry geologists started work in the 1970s, and will be retiring in the next few years. Taken together, these facts mean that more and more geology vacancies are going to open up in oil companies in the coming decade, with salaries likely to increase further. It seems that, even today, taking up a Bachelor's Degree in Geology or Geologic Engineering is well worth it. Beefing this up with a Master's in Sedimentology, Stratigraphy, Structural Geology or Geophysics will almost certainly net you an extra ,000 or ,000.

With increasing demand for oil from China and India, as well as continuing demand from the US and Europe to drive the search for more oil, the job vacancies in oil fields and offshore drilling rigs will remain unfilled for some time to come. This is definitely the hot job of the next two decades.

What Are The Common Problems Encountered On Project Management Work-Civil And Structural Engineer?

Reading Level: Intermediate

One of the tasks of civil engineer is the project management. Wherever a project commence, it is starting of 'live' of project problem until it has been completed build. Below are some of common problems that civil engineer may faced:

Engineer Job

1. Project commenced without acknowledgment of civil engineer. It is common especially for small scale of project; such as single unit of structure like bungalow. Engineer will only alert whenever problem is happened at site; and problem is unable to resolve it by contractor. Contractor will like to build it without interruption of engineer.

What Are The Common Problems Encountered On Project Management Work-Civil And Structural Engineer?

2. Even though civil engineer aware about the construction work, some of un- responsible contractor will try to do some work in the time that engineer is unable to present. As for example; contractor carry out the concreting work after office hour especially in the evening, nighttime and public holiday. Once concreted, engineer is unable to inspect it.

3. Whenever construction started, un-experience contractor will do work by referring to civil engineering drawings without read in-conjunction with other professional drawing such as architecture, mechanical and electrical drawings. As a result, there will be a number of hacking during or after completion of structural works. It incurred a number of arguments and costs.

4. Even though an inexperience contractor is read engineering drawings, somehow contractor is build to their own knowledge; especially from contractor previous project. If previously contractor had been built a number of pad footing foundation, contractor obtain a piling foundation project. The contractor will try to change it to pad footing foundation by his own knowledge. Or even in pad footing foundation, contractor will change pad footing to smaller size. It will end up with structural problem.

5. Some irresponsible contractor will ignore engineer instruction. Contractor will build to his own knowledge. Contractor will always persuade client that contractor is builder. Contractor tells client that he is more site experience than civil engineer. Engineer has not much site building experience. Most of the time, client will agree with contractor because contractor shown client with physical construction works and engineer without much of physical product. These will continue until problem happened and unable to resolve by contractor. Finally, they will seek for engineer advice.

6. Contractor perform cost cutting on project work. Now days, project cost is very competitive. In order to obtain a project by bidding, some contractor may lower down the bidding cost to below the cost. When project is awarded, contractor will perform unnecessary cost cutting. This will endanger client.

7. When client is contractor and contractor is client, civil engineer will be in difficult position on dealing with client and contractor. There will be always in conflict of interest.

These problems may faced by civil engineer. How to overcome them will mainly base on engineer experience. Junior engineer shall not advice to send them to resolve these matters. Anyway, junior engineer shall be in guidance of senior engineer whenever problems are being solved.

Civil Construction and Engineering

Civil engineering is a concept that deals with the design, construction and maintenance of the physical and naturally built environment. The act of civil construction and engineering includes bridges, roads, canals, airports, dams and buildings. These are merely just a few examples of what civil construction and engineering is about.

Civil engineering is one of the oldest engineering disciplines after military engineering. It has been an aspect of life since the beginning of human existence. Until modern times there was no clear distinction between civil engineering and architecture.

Engineer Job

One of the main aspects of civil construction and engineering is structural engineering. With structural engineering a structure needs to be able to successfully support itself as well as being able to resist loads. It is the job of a structural engineer to ensure that the design and construction of aspects such as bridges, roads and airports etc are safe and successful for their function. Some of the design considerations that need to be kept in mind are the strength, stiffness and stability of the civil construction. All of these need to commit to safety checks so that the structure can hold itself. Other considerations that need to be kept in mind when it comes to the civil construction and engineering includes the cost, constructability, safety, aesthetics and sustainability of the proposed structure.

Civil Construction and Engineering

In the society that we live in today it is safe to say that society wouldn't work without civil construction and engineering. This is because the infrastructures that we use in our daily lives, the infrastructures that support our daily lives wouldn't be in existence if it wasn't for civil construction and engineering. We use aspects such as roads and harbours, railways and airports, hospitals, sports stadiums and schools, access to drinking water and shelter from the weather in our daily lives without a second thought to the construction and engineering that is behind them. We rely more than ever on building contractor teams and inventive people who design and build as well as maintain the sophisticated environment that surrounds our everyday life.

The job of a civil construction team/engineer is more than merely the building side of these infrastructures. They have many activities that they must do every day, including drafting, decision making, computer interaction, communication, documentation, creative thinking, organising, information collecting, estimating and analysing. It is the job of a construction engineer to draft and design structures and show others how to build them. A construction engineer has to analyse information and make the right decision to solve the problems.

If you are a business owner or the owner of property who wishes to expend and build civil structures such as a road to provide easier access or an extension is needed at an airport, it is essential that you enlist the help of a building contractor team who are highly skilled and experienced in undertaking all aspects of civil building and construction. The building contractor team should have structural engineers who are able to undertake the planning and safety aspects of the design to ensure that the finished product is up to standards.

How to Get a Job in the Oilfield - Jobs Offshore and Onshore in Oil Well Drilling

The oil and gas industry is booming right now with the price of crude oil going up nearly every day. Due to worldwide demand the need for workers in the oil and gas industry has never been greater. Here is an introduction to the types of jobs that are out there and how you might apply.

On a rig site there are basically two types of workers, those who work directly for the rig and those who work for service companies that provide a multitude of services to the rig and to the oil company. Often the rig has been leased, or is under contract to an oil company. Other times a very large oil company may own its own rigs but it will still employ service companies.

Engineer Job

The workers that do the main job of drilling the well are called roughnecks. Their job is to make the connections as each thirty foot piece of pipe is drilled into the ground and another is added to take it's place and be drilled down as the process is repeated over and over hundreds of times until the well reaches a depth of several thousand feet. The roughnecks also have the job of removing this pipe from the well, piece by piece (called tripping) when the well is done or if the drill bit needs to be changed. It is backbreaking work. Workers on the rig floor can expect a salary of up to ,000 per year even with only a GED or High School Degree. A driller, who is the roughneck's boss, may earn 0,000 or more per year.

How to Get a Job in the Oilfield - Jobs Offshore and Onshore in Oil Well Drilling

A roughneck starts out as a "worm", the name for any inexperienced worker in the oilfield, and has to work his way up the ladder to earn his place on the crew.

Service "hands" or employees perform every kind of function on an offshore or onshore rig you can imagine. From companies that provide the rig's necessities such as potable water and sewer services, to geologists that monitor the drilling mud cuttings for oil and gas, to companies that haul away the drill bit cuttings that have been separated from the drilling fluid.

Wireline Logging companies are service companies that are hired to run instruments down the well bore and analyze the layers of rock that have been cut for traces of oil and gas, creating a illustrated chart of the vertical well that shows geologists what type of rocks have been encountered and if they are productive.

Well Logging companies hire operators and analysts for these jobs for salaries approaching 0,000 per year. Often a degree in petroleum engineering or geology is required.

An oil company will hire a "mud company" to provide the services of formulating the drilling fluid or "mud". A mud engineer will stay on location and check the fluid properties of the drilling mud on a regular basis. It the person has prior chemistry experience, oilfield experience or just plain "knows somebody" the drilling mud company will hire them and send them to a three month "mud school" to learn the trade and then put them in the field as a trainee with a senior employee. Mud engineers can make upwards of 0,000.

Other service company related jobs include casing crews, which are hired to come in after the well has been drilled and install heavy iron pipe down into the wellbore. These are hard manual labor jobs but can start at .00 per hour or more with lots of overtime.

There are also jobs in the production end of the business. After a well has been drilled the oil company will need companies to install tanks, pipelines, pumpjacks and more to get a well into production. These jobs usually pay less than jobs in exploration but the work hours may be more predictable.

If you are considering a career in the oil and gas exploration industry, keep in mind that you may be away from home for weeks or even months at a time. Having a good home life and a secure relationship is a must.

I recommend that anyone without prior oilfield experience read as much about the business as you can before even job hunting so that you may be familiar with an employers questions and what kind of job you may be getting into.

Good Luck.

Engineer GCC Mining Qualification

Many mining engineering job opportunities have a requirement for candidates to have a Government Certificate of Competency (GCC) - Mines and Works, over and above their academic qualifications and working experience. This certificate, also referred to as a "Government Ticket", is issued to a successful candidate by the Department of Minerals and Energy in South Africa. The qualification is widely used as a recommendation for positions in mining roles in Africa, not only within South Africa's borders.

The rules and syllabi governing this qualification are regulated in terms of the Mine Health and Safety Act (1996). A certificate is issued to successful candidates in one of two forms:

Engineer Job

Certificate of Competency as Mechanical Engineer for Mines and Works or

Engineer GCC Mining Qualification

Certificate of Competency as Electrical Engineer for Mines and Works.

There are various steps to be completed before registering for the Qualifying Examinations which are held twice yearly. The Institution of Certificated Mechanical and Electrical Engineers, South Africa (ICMEESA) provides clear guidance on this and has published a chart showing the different routes to GCC.

1. Qualifications required

Academic Route

A B.Sc. degree in mechanical or electrical engineering recognized by the Commission of Examiners; at least two years post graduate appropriate practical experience in the maintenance and operations of mechanical and electrical machinery, satisfactory to the Commission of Examiners and of which at least one year has been at a mine in the RSA; or

Technikon Route

Individual Technikons may structure a curriculum to cover the electrical and mechanical courses according to the requirements of the Plant Engineering syllabus. However, these are subject to a clear set of pre-requisites for formal learning and length of experience similar to the academic route.

The qualifications and experiential learning leading up to acceptance for the qualifying examinations should, theoretically prepare the student to write the exams. In practice, it normally happens that additional tuition is needed to prepare for the exams, particularly in the mathematical calculations. External service providers run refresher courses to prepare candidates especially those with demanding day jobs and those who graduated many years earlier.

2. Qualifying Examinations

To qualify for a Certificate of Competency as Mechanical or Electrical Engineer for Mines and Works, the following subjects must be passed by persons accepted as candidates:

(a) Plant Engineering; and

(b) Legal Knowledge (Health and Safety Act and Regulations).

To qualify for a Certificate of Competency, candidates must obtain at least 50% in each subject stipulated above. Candidates need not pass both subjects at the same examination sitting, but the second subject must be passed within three years or six consecutive examination sittings after passing the first, otherwise both subjects must be re-written. An appropriate Certificate of Competency will be forwarded to candidates who have passed the subjects required to qualify for such a certificate.

There are additional requirements and regulations available to prospective candidates who are advised to refer to www.dmr.gov.za/Exams/Enegineers.html

13 Different Types of Engineering Explained

As a student considering your options for college or university, the choices can be overwhelming. This is the case even within certain disciplines where there might be a dozen different subcategories and / or specialties within the profession. Let's explore some of the more popular Engineering disciplines, shall we?

Agricultural Engineering is the engineering discipline that strives to apply engineering science to agricultural production and farming. In some circles it is commonly accepted that the scope of agricultural engineering is broader than all other forms of engineering, as it combines elements of mechanical, civil, and chemical engineering with animal and plant biology.

Engineer Job

Architectural Engineering involves the application of engineering principles to building construction and design. In some parts of the world, the words architect and architectural engineer are used interchangeably.

13 Different Types of Engineering Explained

Biomedical Engineering strives to apply engineering principles and technology to the field of medicine. Originally considered an interdisciplinary specialization, biomedical eng has grown to become a respected discipline of its own. Tissue engineering, while also considered a specialization within biotechnology, is one such example of biomedical engineering in action.

Ceramic Engineering relates to the practice of designing and creating objects from inorganic, non-metallic materials. The process generally includes the purification of raw materials, the production of compounds, their formation into components, and the study of their composition, properties and structure.

Civil Engineering is a discipline that deals primarily with the design, construction and maintenance of bridges, roads, canals, and the like. As a point of interest, this engineering discipline was enshrined to distinguish itself from military engineering. It is considered the second-oldest discipline, after military.

Computer Engineering is a combination of computer science and electronic engineering. Computer engineers design both computer software and computer hardware, in addition to developing solutions for the integration of the two.

Electrical Engineering is the study and application of electromagnetism, electronics, and electricity. It's a broad-based discipline that encompasses the design and implementation of various electronic / electrical systems such as circuits, generators, motors, and transformers.

Women Under Represented in Engineering Jobs

Our annual survey of those using online job boards to find work in the engineering sector is a good snapshot of what's changing in the sector and what's not.

And sadly one thing that's remained fairly static over the years is the number of women who respond. With the percentage this year standing at 10 per cent, it's obvious engineering is still a very male-dominated profession.

Engineer Job

Old diehards in the industry might not see this as a potential problem - 'that's just the way things are in engineering' - but by not doing more to encourage women into the profession, aren't we missing a trick that will mean when the economy gets going again and new technologies start to come on stream, there will be a skills gap to fill?

Women Under Represented in Engineering Jobs

It's not as if girls aren't academically good enough in the subjects needed - in fact, they're generally outperforming the boys in what are usually seen as 'masculine' subjects like maths and science.
The truth is they just don't want to.

Potential reasons abound to explain boys' greater affinity with engineering - a misspent youth fiddling with Meccano, building go-carts out of prams, or cannibalising old bikes - but in reality it's probably girls' self-exclusion from a subject they perceive as nerdy and 'non-caring' that does the damage.

Instead, girls tend to head for careers and professions where they feel they can make a difference at a personal level, connect with individuals and provide help where it's needed. The harder-edged business of engineering seems far removed from their people-focused world.

Given this, if we want to encourage women into engineering, perhaps we should approach things from a slightly different angle, by presenting engineering with a human face - emphasising the ability of engineering to benefit not just one or ten or even a hundred people, but quite literally millions of people.

After all, many engineering projects have the capacity to do that, to change continents by building irrigation schemes that bring fertility to previously barren areas, developing sanitation programmes that banish disease from slum areas, creating green technologies that help protect vital habitats, or designing new renewable energy systems.

In other words, isn't it about time we thought - to use 'marketing speak' - not just about presenting the 'features' of engineering, but about extolling its 'benefits' as a powerful force for good to be navigated through an ever-changing world? This would help create a more people-focused 'face' for the profession that would have far greater appeal to women.

When there seems to be a general agreement that the economy needs rebalancing by moving away from dependence on financial services, this could be an ideal time to reinvent engineering.

And when you look around the world, with women already making up 18 per cent of Spain's engineers, 20 per cent of Italy's and 26 per cent of Sweden's, this isn't something that can't be done, but we've obviously some catching up to do.

Metallurgical Engineering Jobs - Where Are They

Job prospects for metallurgical engineering trained graduates and people looking for employment has never been better, even during these tough economic times. Of course, during booming economic times, employers were willing to give sign on bonuses and all other kinds of perquisites to lure metallurgical engineers to accept their job offers. Things are a bit different now, but the opportunities for locating metallurgical engineering jobs still abound if you are willing to do the work to research them out and work at finding yourself gainful employment in this exciting field. In this article we will briefly outline certain areas that are often overlooked.

First and foremost place for metallurgical engineering jobs is the aerospace industry. This is a field where high tech materials scientists and engineers are always sought after. Because of the extreme environments of operation, materials and metallurgical engineers can always find jobs in the aerospace and defense industry.

Engineer Job

Somewhat related to the aerospace industry, but overlapping commercial industrial applications is the thermal spray coatings industry which has a high demand for metallurgical engineering positions to be filled. One can find employment either in the coatings processing business or the coatings raw materials business such as the manufacture of thermal spray wires and powders.

Metallurgical Engineering Jobs - Where Are They

Teaching and research positions in metallurgical engineering have been a steady source of job opportunities for metallurgists. These include positions in colleges and universities as well as in research labs and government organizations such as the transportation department or the nuclear regulatory agencies.

The classical industries of foundry, metal casting and heat treating also have metallurgical engineering job openings although they may be fewer in the developed countries and more so readily available in the developing countries because of outsourcing practices. Thus if you are a metallurgist, there are plenty of employment opportunities even now, and so do not let anyone bring down your spirits by telling you otherwise.
