Our school janitor had been an electrical engineering supervisor. When the industry returned to health his knowledge was considered out of date. I lost track of him, but I imagine he retired as a janitor.
What is at the top of best career lists today, may be at the bottom of job prospect lists in the near future. Added to the difficulty of selecting a best career for yourself is a world economy in turmoil, and the ending of the bureaucratic age. Just as government schools around the world are unleashing a flood of graduates into the job market, bureaucracies are shrinking due to technological innovations and productivity enhancements. That college degree is quickly losing its value.
In the past college degrees promised massive returns on investment because they were rare, and because those who could afford years of deferred earnings while in college were already well connected and financially well off. There was a following period where the level of rewards exceeded the costs of diploma acquisition, as bureaucracies required low level supervisors to have a degree, any degree. That time is passing, but a time of great rewards is opening for those that improve their most valuable asset, their own capabilities.
